Resources for Teachers and Students

The Oceanic Research and Applications Division is committed to providing the special requirements of educators in support of the National Science Education Standards (1995). Toward this goal, ORAD is evaluating the suitability of data and information available from ORAD for teachers and students in grades K-12. We are examining the usefulness of ocean remote sensing data for suggesting studies to be conducted by the students in the classroom. We encourage ORAD scientists to work with educators in providing materials for the classroom. Scientists frequently give presentations to students in grades K-12.

ORAD supports summer internships for public school teachers and for students preparing for a career of teaching science. Staff prepare handout materials and web pages specially tailored for educational activities. ORAD scientists are developing a tutorial in Ocean Remote Sensing for the general reader and non-specialist.

As with any activity within the organization, the educational efforts of ORAD scientists must engage with the larger outreach efforts of NOAA.

The following links provide more detail on the various activities of ORAD directed toward educational opportunities and presentations.

The Science House of the North Carolina State University - ORAD currently has a multiyear contract with The Science House, to evaluate the effectiveness and the accessibility of web pages to educators and students for use in the classroom and/or for student assignments. The Center's activities are described at this site...

Teacher Projects for Grades K-12 - ORAD supports summer internships for school teachers and for college students preparing for a career of teaching science. Working with research staff these teachers prepare handout materials specially tailored for use by teachers of science in the pre- college school levels, from elementary schools through high school.

Educational Pamphlets and Other Materials - NOAA and NESDIS provide many educational pamphlets at scientific meetings and trainng sessions for teachers. You may request these pamphlets by e-mail. Teachers may obtain multiple copies for handing out to students...

Upcoming ORAD Presentations for Educators - ORAD Scientists give educational presentations at training conferences for teachers and other professionals. Upcoming presentations may viewed and selected presentations previously given to educational institutions, meetings, or training sessions are available at this site...

Educational Research and Grants Opportunities - ORAD provides support to qualified researchers and educators for the development of curriculum units and other projects which bridge the ocean remote sensing science and technology to the classroom. Visit this site to explore the possibility that your ideas might receive funding support or find related projects being developed by other teachers and scientists...

ORAD Datasets for Educational Use - Scientists in ORAD develop research quality datasets which are available to other researchers and to educators and students who have a need for these data. The data are not certified as final and there is no guarantee of their archive quality. Archive quality datasets are available through the National Data Centers of NOAA/NESDIS. Use this link to explore available research datasets ...

Visual and Graphical Goodies from ORAD - ORAD scientists frequently develop useful educational graphics or images in the progress of their research. As with the research datasets, these presentations are strictly for research or illustrative purposes and carry no certification of archive quality data or value ...
